The control and safety systems at the Shah Deniz 2 offshore gas platform have been given upgrade thanks to a leading provider of cutting-edge exploration and drilling technology.

"Emerson acted as the Main Automation Contractor for the mega-project,” read a statement by the American company issued on August 18, according to Trend. “The company’s “Project Certainty” approach allowed production to begin more than four months ahead of schedule.”

Emerson Process Management was awarded a five-year contract worth over $48 million in 2014 by BP, the main operator of the Shah Deniz field. The company has engineered, installed, configured and tested integrated control and safety systems that help control gas production more safely and efficiently on two new offshore platforms in Azerbaijan’s sector of the Caspian Sea, and at an onshore gas processing plant at the Sangachal terminal.

Shah Deniz was developed in two phases, dubbed Shah Deniz Stage 1 and Shah Deniz Stage 2. Currently, Shah Deniz Stage 2 is the sole supplier to the Southern Gas Corridor mega-pipeline and will provide Turkey and continental Europe with 16 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The corridor will deliver, starting sometime in 2020, 10 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas each year to Europe, enough to power 10 million homes. The corridor is also supplying Turkey with an additional six bcm of natural gas per year.

“Emerson’s Project Certainty model is designed to help companies ensure that complex projects do not overrun timelines and budgets, and Emerson’s MAC services are a core element of that strategy,” Jim Nyquist, group president of systems and solutions for Emerson’s Automation Solutions business, said in a statement issued by Subsea World News.

“We are proud to have helped complete this project ahead of schedule and excited to provide continued support to promote long-term successful operations.”
