Schaeffler today, together with the Bavarian State Government and other alliance partners from business, science and municipalities, has signed a letter of intent to found the "Hydrogen Alliance Bavaria". The overall objective is to unite climate protection, energy, mobility and technological innovation, and to exploit the enormous potential of hydrogen technology as a source of energy for the future. At the founding ceremony in the Energie Campus Nuremberg, the Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Markus S?der, Hubert Aiwanger, Minister of State for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Bernd Sibler, Minister of State for Science and the Arts, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Gutzmer, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and Chief Technology Officer of Schaeffler AG, as well as Prof. dr. Tim Hosenfeldt, Head of Innovation and Central Technology of Schaeffler AG.

Technology leader for sustainable mobility
"We want to create CO2-neutral, sustainable individual mobility with a view to the entire energy chain," says Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Gutzmer. "With purely battery-electric vehicles alone, one can not solve the global CO2 emissions problem." Green hydrogen will become increasingly important as a raw material and energy source, on the one hand through direct use in the fuel cell and on the other, with the inclusion of CO2 as Basis for synthetically produced, gaseous or liquid e-fuels. This central position will take on green hydrogen not only in mobility, but also in the energy industry. One of the goals of the Alliance is therefore to develop Bavaria into a leading location in research and industrial production of key hydrogen components and to establish it as a technology leader in hydrogen storage and logistics.

Schaeffler focuses on key components for fuel cells
Schaeffler has long focused on the value chain of key components for the fuel cell, using traditional core competences. By precise forming and coating in the nanometer range, bipolar plates are produced which form the core of the fuel cell layered into so-called stacks. The fuel cell stacks are an energy converter that allows H? and O? to react to water. This generates electricity that can be used to drive the electric motor in the vehicle. Other competences, such as electronic controls, specific rolling bearing solutions or smart thermal management modules, expand the Schaeffler portfolio for optimized fuel cell systems.

Schaeffler will also show holistic approaches to future, sustainable energy chains and CO2-neutral mobility solutions, including fuel cell expertise, from September 12 at the IAA in Frankfurt, in Hall 9, Stand A07.
